Introduction

Tactical formation turns are a core part of section-level fighter employment. In the F-14, they are not just formation manoeuvres. They are tools used to preserve mutual support, maintain radar and visual coverage, manage spacing, and reposition the section efficiently in response to threats or tasking.

Many crews know the names of these turns, but fewer understand the geometry behind them. That is a problem, because these manoeuvres only work when both aircraft understand not only what turn is being called, but also why it is being used and how the geometry is supposed to develop. A section that performs the wrong turn, or performs the correct turn poorly, will lose spacing, lose visual support, reduce sensor coverage, and may even create a mid-air risk.

This page defines the four most important tactical formation turns for squadron use: the Check Turn, Tac Turn, Hook Turn, and Cross Turn. It also explains when each should be used and what F-14 crews should be trying to achieve with them.

General Purpose of Tactical Turns

Tactical turns are used to change the heading of a two-ship formation without giving up tactical effectiveness. In practice, this means the section should try to maintain:

  • Mutual support between both aircraft
  • Visual contact where possible
  • Useful radar coverage
  • Safe formation spacing
  • Good geometry relative to the threat

These turns are normally flown from Combat Spread, usually around 0.8 to 1.5 NM, depending on the tactical situation, weather, threat, and crew proficiency.

The correct turn depends on three main factors:

  1. How large the heading change is
  2. Where the threat is relative to the formation
  3. What type of coverage or posture the section wants to preserve

Check Turn

Purpose

The Check Turn is used for small heading corrections without significantly changing formation geometry.

When to Use It

A Check Turn is appropriate for minor changes in direction, such as CAP station corrections, small navigation changes, or slight intercept adjustments. As a rule, it is best used for heading changes of about 30° or less.

Geometry

In a Check Turn, both aircraft turn in the same direction at the same time. It is the simplest of the tactical turns and requires the least coordination. Because both aircraft turn together, the formation remains easy to manage during small heading changes.

Advantages

The Check Turn is simple, quick, and causes minimal disruption when only a small correction is needed.

Disadvantages

If used for larger heading changes, spacing and geometry will begin to degrade. It also does less to preserve full threat coverage during the turn than more formal tactical manoeuvres.

F-14 Notes

For Tomcat crews, the Check Turn is most useful for routine CAP management, small AWG-9 search adjustments, and minor repositioning when a full tactical turn would be unnecessary.

Tac Turn

Purpose

The Tac Turn is used to reposition the section through 90° while maintaining mutual support and tactical usefulness.

When to Use It

A Tac Turn is commonly used when the threat, target, or required new heading lies roughly abeam of the formation. It is a standard manoeuvre for BVR repositioning, heading changes during intercepts, and sector reorientation.

Geometry

In a Tac Turn, the outside aircraft turns first. The inside aircraft delays its turn until the outside aircraft approaches a nose-on position relative to it. This timing is what preserves tactical geometry.

During the manoeuvre, the aircraft will swap sides. That is normal and should be expected.

Advantages

The Tac Turn allows a fast repositioning while preserving offensive posture and mutual support. It is especially useful when the section needs to react to a tactical picture without losing structure.

Disadvantages

It requires practice and good timing. If airspeeds differ, or if one aircraft turns too early or too late, spacing can degrade quickly.

F-14 Notes

For F-14 operations, the Tac Turn is especially useful for:

  • BVR commits
  • Repositioning towards a BRAA call
  • Sector changes during CAP or BARCAP
  • Tactical heading changes during intercept timelines

Tomcat crews should be disciplined with timing here. The AWG-9 gives the section strong long-range capability, but poor Tac Turn execution will still damage formation support and complicate the intercept.

Hook Turn

Purpose

The Hook Turn is used for large formation heading changes or controlled 180° reversals while keeping the section together.

When to Use It

Use a Hook Turn for CAP reversals, BARCAP flow, BVR repositioning, or any situation where the section must turn together without crossing flight paths.

Geometry

In a Hook Turn, both aircraft turn to the same side at the same time.

Both aircraft select MIL power and fly a tight, controlled turn. The aim is to turn efficiently without gaining or losing airspeed. Do not pull so hard that the aircraft bleeds energy, but do not make the turn so wide that the section becomes slow to reposition.

Advantages

The Hook Turn is simple, predictable, and useful for controlled reversals.

Disadvantages

Poor power or turn management can cause spacing problems. If the turn is too soft, it wastes airspace. If it is too hard, the aircraft loses airspeed and becomes vulnerable.

F-14 Notes

For the F-14, fly the Hook Turn in MIL power with an energy-sustaining turn.

F-14 Employment Considerations

In the F-14, tactical turns must always be considered together with radar employment, timeline management, and crew coordination.

The aircraft’s long-range intercept capability is only useful if the section keeps good tactical geometry. A poor turn may temporarily blind part of the formation, degrade mutual support, or force one aircraft out of position during an intercept.

Tomcat crews should therefore think about tactical turns in the following way:

  • Check Turn for small corrections with minimal disruption
  • Tac Turn for efficient section repositioning during BVR or intercept work
  • Hook Turn for controlled reversals while maintaining radar and visual coverage

RIOs should understand the expected geometry just as well as Pilots. Even though the Pilot flies the turn, the RIO should help maintain tactical awareness, call spacing concerns, and support the lead’s plan.
